The Casket Girl opera
On Friday and Saturday, "The Casket Girl" is a newly commissioned opera for children, inspired by a true event in 2013 at Barber’s Point, on the banks of the River Alde just below Snape, where a casket of personal treasures was discovered in the Anglo-Saxon grave of a young woman. Russell Hepplewhite's score transports us from a modern-day archaeological dig to the ancient world of this mysterious maiden, unlocking the secrets of her life and death.
Performances take place on Friday 22nd at 6:00pm, and on Saturday 23rd at both 3:00pm and 6:00pm,
at Aldeburgh's Jubilee Hall. Tickets are £14.00 for adults, and £7.00 for under-16's.

☞ The archaeology was carried out by members of the Aldeburgh and District Local History Society,
some of whom subsequently contributed to the staging of this opera.
You can read about their "dig" here and download the final report here (see especially p104 et seq.).
The site, on the edge of Hazlewood Marshes Reserve, was flooded months after the grave's discovery.
