Palm Sunday sung service
Palm Sunday, 5th April at 6:30pm:
"The Cross of Christ" with
the Alde River Singers
at St John the Baptist Snape
As an alternative to Choral Evensong, the Alde River Singers will be leading this Service of Devotion for congregation and choir. It has a mixture of well-known hymns and choral items to fit into the readings and prayers in preparation for Holy Week, leading up to Easter the next weekend.
The Palm Sunday morning Eucharist Service at Great Glemham will have echoed the excitement of the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, accompanied by loud "Hosannas" from the crowds. The evening service takes a devout look at the subsequent events which led to the crucifixion on Good Friday and climaxed in the triumphal resurrection of Jesus on Easter morning.
Over the ages, this period has been the inspiration for a wealth of artistic output: of music, painting and literature. Making this choice of appropriate music and words has been a task undertaken by the Royal School of Church Music for the past sixty years and more. The service will contain music composed by a variety of composers ranging from Orlando Gibbons to J.S. Bach, Mozart and Sir John Stainer.
We are delighted that our accompanist will be Jonathan Turner, Acting Director of Music at Woodbridge School. Before his teaching career he was Organ Scholar at both Lincoln College, Oxford, and Southwell Minster. Jonathan has a very busy schedule and we are most grateful that he will be with us for this special service.
Local singers would be most welcome to join the "regulars" for a rehearsal at 4pm in Snape Church before the service at 6:30pm. There will be a break for tea at about 5:30pm.
Please let Bill Gloyn know if you would be interested in joining, at bill@gloyn.com. Full details of all the music will be supplied in advance.
