UPDATED ON 23rd FEBRUARY
—
Two wonderful events have raised a total of £700 towards vital church repairs.
On Sunday, 18th February at the church, The Friends of Snape Church (FoSC) hosted a concert by the Goldcrest Ensemble, supported by a grant by the William Alwyn Foundation (WAF). William Alwyn was a flautist, composer and Blythburgh resident who was knighted for services to music. On this memorable Sunday, Goldcrest’s flautist Duke Dobing, violist Raphael Hurwitz and harpist Miriam Keogh of Goldcrest were joined by ex-Royal Philharmonic violinist/Snape resident Mike Dolan. The programme featured Alwyn’s joyous Irish Suite, beautiful French Suite and shorter pieces by Mathias, Ibert and Dubois. These works are all rarely performed, and we were privileged to hear them.
Three days earlier, on Thursday 15th at the Village Hall and also in aid of the church, GreenSnape hosted Brian Boulton’s fascinating talk about Snape’s history, illustrated by about a third of his many painstakingly collected and well-curated photos. We look forward to seeing, and hearing, more of village life in days of yore. It was a real treat. Thanks to Brian and GreenSnape.
The next Friends' event at Snape Church is a solo show at 3pm on Sunday, 17th March. Georgina Lock will perform as Hannah Snell, Female Soldier, 1750 — a real-life, cross-dressing maverick who fought in India. As usual, the performance is donated, and all proceeds from donations will go towards church repairs.
POSTED ON 28th JANUARY
Perhaps you may remember that the wonderful Goldcrest Ensemble performed a programme of C20th French music at Snape Church in December 2022. Well, on 18th February they will be back! The core trio of Duke Dobling (flute), Raphael Hurwitz (viola) and Miriam Keogh (harp) will be joined by Mike Dolan (violin), to play The French Suite and The Irish Suite by Suffolk-based composer William Alwyn. This concert is generously supported by the William Alwyn Foundation.
William, also a flautist with the London Symphony Orchestra, lived at Blythburgh from 1960, and died in Southwold in 1985. He was knighted for his services to music in 1978. His archive is kept at Cambridge University Library.
The concert is arranged by The Friends of Snape Church (FoSC), and entry is by donation with all profits going towards repair of the church guttering. FoSC thank Goldcrest very much for their generous input, and are delighted to welcome them back.
Doors open at 2:30pm.
In the meantime, we would also be grateful to receive donations online via our webpages.
