How shopping used to be
Vic Last’s general store and fish and chip shop were a central fixture of the village for many years. His ice cream and fish and chip vans were a familiar site all around the area.

A branch line served the Maltings from 1859, carrying lime and coke in and malted barley and other agricultural produce out, until its closure on 7th March 1960. By the time it closed it was the last regular main line steam working in Suffolk. The line was for goods only, the picture below showing the REM tour is the only occasion on which it was used for carrying passengers. Other photos below include some wonderful portraits of tradesmen from the Maltings.
