Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration

Queen's 90th Birthday at SnapeQueen’s 90th Birthday Celebration in Snape

Melanie Thurston and Mary James were determined not to let the Queens 90th Birthday pass us by in Snape without recognising it in some way.  So we put a notice in the magazine earlier in the year inviting anyone interested, to join us in a meeting to see what we could come up with.  We were then joined by a small group of people in the village, representing the Village Hall, Church and WI.  We decided to organise a Queens Birthday Tea Party and expected no more that 100 people, to join the celebration if we were lucky!

On Saturday 11 June, our party took place in Snape at the village hall.  Earlier in the week more invitations/tickets had to be printed as we exceeded over 200 guests.   Organisers arrived at the  village hall at the crack of dawn to set up for the party and 60 punnets of strawberries had to be washed and hulled.  The weather was very kind and we were able to set up a street party table outside at the hall for the guests, who all brought plates of food for everyone to share.  Many guests were sporting fun hats, crowns and wearing red, white and blue.  There were lots of activities to be enjoyed which included pin the tail on the corgi, guess the weight of the Queens favourite cake, face painting, treasure hunt, jewellery making, prize bingo and hook the duck.  Children were given a commemorative coin and a free icecream of their choice from the icecream van.

We were treated to a special slide show which was on display inside the village hall, produced by Brian Boulton, depicting Snapes celebrations over the years. Many enjoyed sitting and watching the photographs, recognising familiar faces from the past and present.

The adults all had a free ticket for the prize raffle and there were some fabulous prizes to be won which were donated by local business’.    Everything was free for all to enjoy due to the generous donations from Suffolk County Council Locality Budget and Suffolk Coastal District Council Enabling Communities Budget.  There was entertainment from the Snape school children who sang a medley of songs from through the 90 years and we were also serenaded by a guitar player.  To finish off we all enjoyed a good old sing along with the Love to Sing Community Choir which ended by singing the National Anthem.

SVH0065We would like to thank everyone who came along to make the Queens 90th Birthday Celebration in Snape such a wonderful occasion.  Thank you to all who helped to organise the event and make it possible on the day and also to those who donated the raffle prizes.

Who knows perhaps we will do it all again one day when the Queen reaches 100.
