Who are we and what are our aims?

GreenSnape is a group of Snape residents whose aim is to work constructively to protect and enhance the environment for people and wildlife in and around Snape.

We formed GreenSnape in February 2017 in response to Snape Maltings’ proposal to build a 470 space car park on the grazing marsh between the Crown pub and Snape Bridge. Most villagers signed our petitions against the plan, which helped persuade the Maltings to drop the idea. Now our intention is to get involved in projects that make our village a nicer place to live, for the benefit of residents, visitors and our wildlife. To do this, we will work with our Parish Council, District and County Councils, villagers and local landowners. We will also oppose any plans or actions that we feel would damage or be detrimental to our local environment.

We’re keen to include as many fellow residents as possible in our activities and would love your ideas about what you would like to see happen in our village.

Our plans and projects

Our next project will be with Snape Primary School in October, with the children helping to plant bulbs – daffodils and crocuses – in verges along Church Road through the village. Many people feel that the area around the village sign looks rather neglected and is a poor advertisement for our village. We’d like to give this area a long-needed facelift. Plans also include improving those pieces of land owned by the village which could be made more attractive for people and wildlife. All of this will cost money, and we’ve set up GreenSnape to take best advantage of any funding available for our activities.

We’ve also had time to run our first event, a wildlife walk on Snape Warren on the evening of 14 August. We were lucky enough to both see and hear nightjars and also to see 14 glow worms, a first for several people. We intend to offer more such events in future.

How can I get involved?

If GreenSnape sounds like something you would like to get involved in, then please contact one of our joint secretaries Victoria Hambley or Lesley Walduck Or you could speak with any of our other committee members – Miranda Barclay, Teresa Cook, Peter Fowler, John Hambley, Graeme Murray or Derek Walduck.
